About three weeks ago, I began my summer internship in Manhattan with French jewelry designer, Marc Alary - graphic artist turned jewelry designer. His 18K pieces are carefully engineered to include movable parts which make his jewelry stand out amongst other fine jewelers who choose to follow a more conservative path in their designs. Something that I admire about Marc's design process that I do not really see in other fine jewelers is where he chooses to find his inspiration. Designers at Tiffanys, Cartier, and Van Cleef and Arpels find inspiration in vintage jewelry which results in repetitive (and more often, boring) designs. Marc looks to furniture design, sculpture, and outlets outside of the jewelry field to find inspiration.
I mean really, how can you not want a monkey that sits on your finger and take any position you move it to?!
